Siri Hustvedt liest
The Blazing World
The new novel from Siri Hustvedt is an intellectual detective story set in the art world.
Centring around the rediscovery of the work of the artist Harriet Burden, unnoticed in life but gradually gaining posthumous acclaim, the themes of identity, gender, femininity and artistic ownership are explored.
Through notebooks, diaries, magazine and newspaper entries, Harriet’s character begins to take shape within the novel as she struggles to find her place in the male dominated art world whilst retaining a fierce sense of her own identity.
Harriet is a wonderful creation – difficult, odd, sensitive, intriguing, formidably intelligent and with a genius all her own – and this brilliant novel from Siri Hustvedt is as engaging and fascinating as the characters she has created.
